NEWMAN CATHOLIC BASEBALL LOSES BIG LEAD, RALLIES TO TOP ASSUMPTION

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Wausau Newman Catholic blew a five-run lead but followed that with a five-run explosion in the sixth inning and went on to defeat Wisconsin Rapids Assumption 11-6 in a Marawood Conference South Division baseball game Monday at Witter Field.
Newman Catholic led 6-1 after four innings before Assumption rallied to tie the game with five runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Ryan Shaw had a two-run single, back-to-back of errors allowed two more Assumption runners to score, and Aaron Livernash tied the game with an RBI groundout, making it 6-6.
Newman Catholic quickly responded, putting up five runs of its own in the top of the sixth to regain control.
Nate Klement had a two-RBI single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jacob Pfiffner, and Eli Gustafson knocked in two more with a single to put the Cardinals on top 11-6, where it stayed the rest of the way.
James Klement struck out six in 5 2/3 innings for Newman to pick up the pitching victory. He also had two hits and an RBI.
Gustafson went 3-for-4 with four RBI, and Pfiffner and Nate Klement both had two RBI in the win for the Cardinals (6-5, 4-4 Marawood South).
Shaw went 3-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Assumption offense. The Royals fall to 2-8 overall and 0-8 in the Marawood South.
The two teams meet again Thursday at Brockmeyer Park in Wausau.
