LA CROSSE CENTRAL PUNCHES TICKET TO D2 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME WITH INSTANT CLASSIC VICTORY
An instant classic in the final division 2 state semi-final as La Crosse Central comes all the way back to take down Westosha Central. La Crosse Centrals’ Devon Fielding nailed a three-pointer from the left corner with 24 seconds left to give the Riverhawks a 52-51 lead. After a missed lay-up opportunity by Westosha Central, La Crosse Central went to the free throw line with 2.4 seconds left. Fielding missed the front-end of a one and one, Falcons’ Jack Rose got the rebound and was then blocked by Fielding attempting a three-quarter court shot.
La Crosse Central trailed 48-38 with 6:48 to go in the game, but the Riverhawks managed to crawl back into the game led by Devon Fielding who finished with 20 points and seven rebounds. Fielding shot 9-19 from the field and 2-6 from beyond the 3-point arc.
Noah Compan finished with 17 points and shot 8-13 from the field for the Riverhawks and Bennett Fried poured in nine points for La Crosse Central.
For just the second time in school history the Westosha Central Falcons made it to state and like their first trip couldn’t quite make it out of the semi-final. The Falcons were led by Kenny Garth who finished with 18 points and three rebounds. Jack Rose poured in 18 points as well and ripped down four rebounds.
La Crosse Central will take on Pewaukee in the division 2 boys state championship game on Saturday night at approximately 6:35.
The Riverhawks will be looking for their third state championship in school history, the previous other two were in 1925 and 2017.
