EDGAR BOYS BASKETBALL PULLS AWAY LATE TO DEFEAT HURLEY IN WIAA DIVISION 4 SECTIONAL SEMIFINAL

EDGAR – In a tight game late, Edgar turned up its defense, knocked down its free throws, and walked away with a victory.


The Wildcats led by two points with approximately 4 1/2 minutes to go before ending the game on a 16-0 run and defeated Hurley 54-36 in a WIAA Division 4 boys basketball sectional semifinal Thursday night at Edgar High School.


Edgar (22-2) will host Clear Lake (22-0) in a Division 4 sectional final at 4 p.m. Saturday with the winner moving on to the state tournament next week. Edgar is looking for its first state appearance since 1997, when it won the Division 4 championship.


Edgar made 11-straight stops on defense to end the contest.


Drew Guden scored 20 of his game-high 24 points in the second half for the Wildcats, drilling four 3-pointers and making all eight of his free throw attempts.


Kyle Brewster added 13 points on the strength of three 3-pointers, and Austin Dahlke had 11 points for Edgar.


Dominic Croci had 11 points to pace Hurley, which has its season end with a 23-3 record that includes two losses to Edgar in the past two weeks. Edgar also defeated the Northstars 59-51 in the regular-season finale on Feb. 13.
