AUBURNDALE SOFTBALL USES BIG FIRST INNING TO DEFEAT MARATHON

AUBURNDALE – The Auburndale softball team completed a season sweep of Marathon, downing the Raiders 9-2 on Thursday at Auburndale High School.
The Eagles, who defeated Marathon 8-6 on the road Tuesday, is now 9-3 overall and 4-2 in the Marawood Conference South Division. Marathon falls to 6-9 and 1-5 in conference play.
Auburndale used a five-run first inning to pull away quickly.
Ashlyn Grimm had a two-run double, and Hailey Grimm and Georgi Schmutzer had RBI singles in the opening inning for the Eagles.
Ashlyn Grimm finished with three hits, and Kaitlyn Kundinger and Schmutzer each added two as Auburndale had 12 hits in the victory.
Hailey Grimm earned the win, striking out five in five innings on the mound.
Auburndale hosts Colby/Abbotsford for a nonconference game Monday at 4:45 p.m.
