OSHKOSH SLIPS PAST APPLETON TO WIN CLASS AAA STATE LEGION TITLE; RAPIDS FINISHES FOURTH

CHIPPEWA FALLS – Oshkosh Post 70 defeated Appleton Post 38 4-3 to capture the 2019 Wisconsin Class AAA American Legion Baseball State Tournament title on Tuesday night at Casper Park.


Oshkosh and Appleton both advance to the Central Plains Regional in Sioux Falls, S.D., which begins Aug. 7.


All four of Oshkosh’s wins at the tournament were by one run. The state title is Oshkosh’s sixth all-time and first since 2006.


Wisconsin Rapids Post 9 reached Day 4 of the state tournament before falling to eventual champion Oshkosh 4-3 on Monday. The Rangers end their season with a 26-10 record.


Tyler Beyer threw a complete game for the Rangers, striking out four and walking four, while allowing seven hits and four runs, three of which were earned.


Wisconsin Rapids was limited to six hits. Caleb Krommenakker and Josh Zwicke had doubles, and Donovan Brandl, Nathan Krommenakker, Jack Wenzel and Jake Wipfli each had singles. Wenzel, Caleb Krommenakker and Garrett Huber had RBIs in the loss.


Wisconsin Rapids had two players selected to the All-State Tournament Team as Brandl and Nathan Krommenakker were chosen to the 18-player squad.


Eau Claire won the Sportsmanship Award, Oshkosh’s Charlie Stenson was named the state tournament Most Valuable Player, and Aaron Reiland of Appleton won the Hitting Award.


In addition to Stenson, Reiland and the two Wisconsin Rapids players, the all-state tournament team consists of Brendan Krumrei and Kaden Wright of Oshkosh; Will Monroe, T.J. Van Eperen, Ben Babich and Carson Kolbe of Appleton; Carter Hesselman, Gabe O’Brien, Levi Schaller and Austin Selz of Eau Claire; Corbin Ovist and Jared Emerson of Rock County; Hunter Olson of Oconomowoc; and Riley Fried of Chippewa Falls.


Appleton (26-6) will play Dubuque County (Iowa) at 9 a.m. and Oshkosh (24-5) will take on Renner (South Dakota) at 4 p.m. in the opening round of the Central Plains Regional. The regional champion moves on to the 93rd American Legion Baseball World Series at Shelby, N.C., on Aug. 15-20.
