WAUSAU – Wausau Newman Catholic put up 48 points in the first half to build a big lead and were able to hold on from there as it defeated first-place Marathon 80-69 in a Marawood Conference South Division boys basketball game Friday at Newman Catholic High School.


Isaac Seidel scored 30 points and Mason Prey added 29 for Newman, which is now 16-6 overall and 11-4 in the Marawood South.


The Cardinals’ win also knocks Marathon (18-4, 13-2 Marawood South) into a tie atop the conference standings with Stratford.


Grant Warren had 22 points and Jaden Koeller scored 17 for Marathon.


Newman Catholic plays a nonconference game at Wabeno on Monday before finishing its Marawood South and regular-season schedule at home against Stratford on Thursday.
