MINOCQUA – Lakeland returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, but Mosinee responded with four unanswered scores and went on to topple the Thunderbirds 27-12 in a Great Northern Conference football game Friday night.
Mosinee is now 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the Great Northern Conference, while Lakeland drops to 2-4 and 1-3 in the GNC.
Lakeland’s Jacob Hayes returned the opening kickoff 67 yards for a touchdown and after a missed extra point the Thunderbirds led 6-0.
Mosinee quickly retaliated as Barnes Bunkelman ripped off a 51-yard run for a score just 19 seconds later, and Trevor Garski added a 44-yard touchdown pass to Keagan Jirschele with 47 seconds to go in the period and the Indians led 13-6.
Wyatt Harris added a 1-yard touchdown run before halftime and Mosinee took a 20-6 lead into intermission.
Garski scored on a 2-yard run in the third quarter to extend the Indians’ lead to 27-6 before Lakeland scored to get within two scores.
Mosinee’s defense held Lakeland out of the end zone the rest of the way to preserve the victory.
