IOLA – The Iola-Scandinavia football team opened its 2021 season with a 39-14 thumping of Marathon in nonconference action Friday night.

Iola-Scandinavia pulled out to a 21-8 lead by halftime and cruised from there.

Quarterback Parker Prahl picked up where he left off in 2020, rushing for 246 yards and four touchdowns in the win. He also picked off a pass on defense.

Isaaiah Hoyord added 77 yards and a touchdown on the ground as the Thunderbirds racked up 357 yards rushing on just 37 carries. Carter Melum scored Iola’s other touchdown on an 18-yard run.

Hoyard and Parker Gullixon each had 10 tackles for the Thunderbirds.

Iola-Scandinavia hosts Wittenberg-Birnamwood on Aug. 27 before traveling to Edgar on Sept. 3. Edgar was the only team to defeat the Thunderbirds last season.
