HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER PREVIEW: SEVEN TEAMS IN AREA LOOK FOR SUCCESS IN 2021

The 2021 high school boys soccer season is underway and seven teams in the Zaleski Sports coverage area all bring back key players in hopes that the fall will be a success on the pitch.


Columbus Catholic eyes a ninth-straight WIAA regional title, Marshfield will boast a strong defense and midfield with six players back from 2020, and Stevens Point returns to Wisconsin Valley Conference competition after competing in the Fox Valley Association during the alternate fall season earlier this spring.


Here is a look at the teams in our area:


AMHERST FALCONS

Coach: Erik Linde, eighth year.

Last year’s record: 3-2-1, 3-1-1.

Returning players: Parker Femal, LF; A.J. Everson, RF; Joey Ligman, CF; Drew Lewallen, DM; Jack Bohm, RWB; Jacob Spoelstra, LWB.

Key newcomers: Noah Spoelstra, CM; Spencer Cohen, CM; Alex Martin, goalkeeper.

From Coach Linde: “I expect to be competitive in conference and have scheduled some big games out of conference. We graduated eight senior starters, so we are trying to rebuild with a very young team.”

From Coach Edwards: “We have a young team, built with primarily juniors and sophomores. As our new goalie and a young defense find their rhythm, our offense will be firing on all cylinders with most of the pieces returning from last year. This team is capable of reaching all of their goals. In a tough conference, we expect to be near the top of the standings. A ninth-straight regional championship is something this team really wants.”

From Coach Molter: “Being moved to Division 1 (for the playoffs) this season, I expect us to be competitive in our conference. I’m not sure what to expect when we travel into the playoffs. I believe our midfield and defense will be strong this season with six of the seven positions being filled by returning players with a lot of varsity experience.”

From Coach Carlson: “We anticipate being competitive with every team we play. We have strength from forward to goalkeeper and experience returning at every level. Toren Holtz was an honorable mention All-State player last year, and he continues to lead our team well on the field and off of it. We hope to be in the mix for winning the Great Northern Conference. We look forward to playing deep in the playoffs. The Great Northern Conference will be balanced, with every single team capable of winning a given game. Medford and Rhinelander are conference favorites, but we hope to be close with them.”
