MAUSTON - The Columbus Catholic Dons baseball team began its 2022 campaign with a convincing 16-5 win over the Phillips Loggers at Woodside Sports Complex on Friday.
Starting pitcher Emmitt Konieczny fanned nine over four innings of work, allowing just one baserunner on a walk. After the opening walk, Koenieczny retired 12 consecutive including five strikeouts in-a-row between the first and second innings.
Phillips starting pitcher Drew Hauschild struck out four and walked four in three complete innings, giving up 12 earned runs.
The Dons scored three in the first inning capped off by a two-out base hit from first baseman Grant Olson that plated Brock Bennington and Cy Becker. The second inning was more of the same for the Dons as they added four more runs as they batted through the order. In the third inning with Koniceczny standing at third and Blake Jakobi at first it was a blast by Brock Bennington over the head of the Phillips centerfielder. Both base runners scored and Bennington beat the throw to home for an inside-the-park home run.
After the Dons scored four more runs in the fifth, the Loggers struck back with five of its own in the bottom of the frame, two shy of forcing a sixth inning.
The 16-5 win for Columbus Catholic gives them a season opening win in back-to-back seasons.
