ATHENS GIRLS BASKETBALL DOWNS PORT EDWARDS IN WIAA DIVISION 5 REGIONAL QUARTERFINAL

ATHENS – Athens used a 22-3 run to close the first half and went on to a 61-22 win over Port Edwards in a WIAA Division 5 girls basketball regional quarterfinal Wednesday night at Athens High School.


No. 4 seed Athens (21-4) led 13-10 before opening the game up with a big run to finish off the first half, and outscored No. 13 Port Edwards 26-9 in the second half to finish off the victory.


Athens will host No. 5 Spencer (18-7) in a D-5 regional semifinal Friday at 7 p.m.


Jazelle Hartwig scored 15 points and McKennzie Schug added 10 for Athens.


Taylor Martin scored 16 of Port Edwards’ 22 points. The Blackhawks finish the season with a 5-19 record.
