STEVENS POINT – Kade Smigat scored three minutes into overtime to lift Stevens Point past Marshfield 3-2 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference boys hockey game Thursday at K.B. Willett Ice Arena.

Stevens Point scored two power play goals in the first period.

Smigat scored at the 7:21 mark and Jacob Sankey added a goal three minutes later to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.

Marshfield fought back to tie the game as Peyton Smith scored at the 9:32 mark of the second period and again 34 seconds into the third.

The game remained 2-2 until Point (9-7, 4-2 Wisconsin Valley Conference) was able to win it overtime.

“We had a rough start, but our boys showed some grit when they came back from two goals down to a team that traditionally we have struggled against,” Marshfield coach Eric Bowman said. “We traded opportunities and had a great chance in the last minute, but did not convert. We worked hard to limit their space and time with the puck, and it showed in the second and third periods. Obviously, we would have liked a win but in a game that opened up like It did in overtime, it can go either way quickly.”

A.J. Trierweiler had 39 saves in goal for the Tigers (7-7-1, 2-3 Wisconsin Valley Conference).

Marshfield will play a nonconference game at Waupaca on Tuesday before hosting Wisconsin Rapids in a Wisconsin Valley Conference game Thursday, Jan. 23, against Wisconsin Rapids.
