PORT EDWARDS – The Port Edwards boys basketball team took over first place in the Central Wisconsin Conference South Division with a come-from-behind 41-38 win over Stevens Point Pacelli on Tuesday night at John Edwards High School.

Pacelli led 38-32 with 2:07 to go before Port Edwards rallied.

Nathan Gibbs converted a rare four-point play, and Erik Mock had a three-point play with 46 seconds left to give the Blackhawks the lead.

Pacelli wasn’t able to convert the rest of the way, with Brynden Beck adding two free throws with 10 seconds remaining to provide the final scoring. Pacelli missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer that would have tied it.

Port Edwards improves to 9-4 overall and 4-0 in the CWC South, taking a one-half game lead over Pacelli (5-8, 4-1 CWC South) and Almond-Bancroft in the conference standings.

Gibbs had 19 points and Beck added 16 for Port Edwards.

Jaydon Awe had 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Logan Mayer added eight points for Pacelli.

Port Edwards hosts Almond-Bancroft in a CWC South matchup on Friday at 7:15 p.m. Pacelli is off until Monday when it hosts Wild Rose.
