MOSINEE – The Mosinee boys soccer team split a pair of Great Northern Conference matches this week, defeating Rhinelander on Tuesday 4-0 and losing to Lakeland 4-0 on Thursday in a pair of road games.

Against Rhinelander, Mosinee took a 2-0 lead by halftime as the Indians’ defense handled the Hodags’ offensive pressure and Toren Holtz and Greyde Rogers scored.

Toren Holtz scored off a Cole Holtz assist five minutes into the second half, and drilled home a direct kick from 30 yards out to complete a hat trick and give Mosinee the victory.

Both teams’ defenses were stellar in the first half of Thursday’s game at Minocqua, with neither team cracking the goal.

The second half started evenly, but a fortunate rebound went Lakeland’s way in front of the Mosinee net and the Thunderbirds knocked it in. That led to a backbreaking sequence where Lakeland got two more goals in the next few minutes. The three goals and the momentum they created gave Lakeland an insurmountable lead, and the Thunderbirds added another late to win 4-0.

Lakeland is now alone in first with a 5-0 GNC record and Mosinee sits in second at 3-2. The entire conference plays each other again, so Mosinee will get Lakeland at home to close the regular season on Oct. 14.

Mosinee (6-4 overall) returns to action with a nonconference game vs. Merrill on Monday at 4:30 p.m. at Edgewood Field.
