PHILLIPS - The Phillips Loggers softball team took control of first place in the Marawood North on Tuesday night with a 2-0 home win over the Athens Bluejays.
With the win, Phillips is now 5-0 in conference play and Athens falls to second place at 4-1. The two teams meet again on Thursday at Athens at 4:45 p.m.
After a scoreless first four innings, it was Phillips finding pay dirt in the bottom of the fifth with Kendall Weik scoring on an Athens error and the Loggers took a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the sixth it was Weik in on the action again, this time hammering a double to center field that scored Mataya Eckert.
In the top of the seventh, Weik took care of things herself from the circle to retire the Bluejays. A Sophia Coker ground out to Weik and then strikeouts of Sydney Coker and Jenna Handschke, her 16th and 17th of the game, secured the Loggers' win.
To go along with the 17 strikeouts, Weik gave up just three hits and no walks thru 21 Athens batters.
