LAKELAND SCORES TWO THIRD-PERIOD GOALS TO DEFEAT MOSINEE IN DIVISION 2 BOYS HOCKEY SECTIONAL FINAL

EAGLE RIVER – Lakeland scored twice in the third period to slip past Mosinee 3-1 in a WIAA Division 2 boys hockey sectional final Friday night at the Eagle River Ice Arena.


Mosinee led 1-0 after a power-play goal by Daniel Gildain at the 5:26 mark of the second period before Lakeland tied it seven minutes later on a goal by Teag Wagner.


Wagner scored again in the opening minute of the third period and the Thunderbirds’ lead held the rest of the way as Max Masayesva turned away 25 saves in goal.


Jack Rubo scored an empty net goal in the final minute to finish off the victory for Lakeland (17-5), which will be making its second-straight appearance at the state tournament.


Lakeland will play in a Division 2 semifinal at the 2022 WIAA State Boys Hockey Tournament at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison on Thursday. Matchups and seedings will be announced Sunday.


Mosinee, which was trying for its first state berth since 1992, finishes the season with a 17-10 record.
