GREENWOOD FOOTBALL BLASTS ASSUMPTION TO KEEP PLAYOFF HOPES ALIVE

GREENWOOD – The Greenwood football team was in must-win mode on Friday, needing a victory against winless Wisconsin Rapids Assumption to keep its WIAA playoff hopes alive.

The Indians took care of business behind a powerful running game and pounded Assumption 42-8 at Greenwood High School.

Greenwood (5-3, 3-3 Cloverwood Conference) needs a win at Thorp next Friday, Oct. 18, to earn a spot in the postseason.

Quarterback Cooper Bredlau ran for 124 yards and three touchdowns, and threw two more, to lead the Indians’ offensive attack.

Bredlau threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Westen Schmitz on the Indians’ opening possession and Sullivan Whitford ran in from the 2-yard line to give the Indians a quick 16-0 lead as Bredlau ran in two-point conversions after both scores.

Bredlau had touchdown runs of 6 and 30 yards in the second quarter, and threw a 6-yard TD pass to Whitford and had a 70-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to finish the scoring for Greenwood.

Assumption (0-8, 0-6 Cloverwood) had a safety and a late touchdown run by Caden Meyers in the final minute to get on the scoreboard.

Wyatt Artac added 74 yards rushing and Whitford had 62 as the Indians piled up 251 yards on the ground.

Assumption will finish its season Oct. 18 at home against Owen-Withee.
