PORT EDWARDS BOYS BASKETBALL EDGES ASSUMPTION

PORT EDWARDS – The Port Edwards boys basketball team used a big run to start the second half and held off Assumption in the final seconds, winning a nonconference game Monday night 51-50 at Port Edwards High School.
Leading by one, Port Edwards missed a pair of free throws with 8.8 seconds to go giving the Royals a chance, but a 3-pointer at the buzzer was off and the Blackhawks held on for the victory.
Assumption falls to 3-5 and Port Edwards improves to 5-4.
Assumption led 30-29 at halftime before going cold to start the second half. Port Edwards scored the first 13 points of the half to take a 12-point advantage.
The Blackhawks led 50-44 with 2:34 to go before Assumption closed to within two late, but couldn’t pull ahead despite Port Edwards going just 6-for-21 from the free throw line.
Nathan Gibbs had 20 points and Brynden Beck added 14 for Port Edwards.
Ryan Shaw topped Assumption with 15 points and Bryson Galbreath scored 12 in the loss.
Port Edwards hosts Tri-County for a Central Wisconsin Conference South Division matchup on Tuesday. Assumption hosts Rib Lake for a Marawood Conference crossover game Friday.
