IOLA-SCANDINAVIA SOFTBALL UPENDS UNDEFEATED BONDUEL IN DIVISION 4 SECTIONAL SEMIFINAL

BONDUEL – No. 3 seed Iola-Scandinavia upset previously undefeated and top-seeded Bonduel 4-3 in nine innings in a WIAA Division 4 sectional semifinal game Tuesday.


The Thunderbirds (18-6) will play Random Lake (16-4) in a WIAA sectional championship game on Thursday at Crandon starting at 5 p.m. The winner qualifies for the 2022 WIAA State Softball Tournament at Goodman Diamond in Madison on June 9-11. Neither team has ever appeared in the state tournament.


Bonduel scored a run in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead.


The T-Birds scored three runs in the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead before Bonduel scored another run in the fifth inning to knot the score at 3-3.


In the ninth inning, Iola-Scandinavia took the lead when Marin Hoyord singled and eventually scored from second on a single by Chloe Timdal that landed just inside the leftfield foul line. The Thunderbirds held Bonduel in the bottom of the ninth to claim the victory.


The T-Birds outhit the Bears 14-8. Hoyord, Makayla Much, and Jaelyn Sivertson each had three hits. Maddie Much had two hits, and Alexa Christoph, Myah Heschke and Chloe Timdal each had run-scoring singles.


Nakiyah Henning, Lila Pleshek and Hailey Zernicke each had two hits for Bonduel (20-1). Zernicke drove in all three runs for the Bears.


Pitcher Maddie Much pitched all nine innings to earn the win for Iola-Scandinavia. Much allowed eight hits, two walks and struck out five batters.
