#6 COLBY ROLLS OVER NEILLSVILLE/GRANTON
SPORTSDESK - The #6 ranked Colby Hornets saw the Neillsville/Granton Warriors come to town and take an early 7-6 1st quarter lead. The Hornets not only stung right back, they completely swarmed the Warriors with 38 consecutive points to win 44-6.
A 44 yard touchdown pass from Braden Trunkel to Carrson Mohr put the Warriors up 7-6 just over four minutes into the game. Colby sent out Noah Robida to field a Neillsville/Granton punt just a minute and change later after a failed Hornet offensive possession and a strong defensive stand. Robida stood at his own 26 yard line and fielded the punt on the second hop. He then went untouched down the Colby sideline 64 yards for the score. The ensuing two point try was no good and that was about all that went wrong for Colby the rest of the way.
The Hornets ripped off 34 more points on a big offensive night from multiple players. Gavino Lopez had 104 yards rushing and a touchdown on 15 attempts. Tyler Klement had 65 yards on 15 runs. Colby quarterback Roman Schmitt completed only nine passes on the night, three were for touchdowns. Schmitt hit Isaac Karl for scoring strikes of 15 and 37 yards and found Joe Hawthorne on a 14 yarder that put Colby up for good at 14-7.
The Colby defense held Neillsville/Granton to 67 rush yards and just 170 total yards. Dante Erickson led the Warriors with 22 yards on five carriers.
Up next for Colby is a road trip to Altoona on September 6th. Neillsville/Granton is home against Colfax on September 6th.
