WAUSAU WEST EDGES WISCONSIN RAPIDS, MARSHFIELD TO WIN WISCONSIN VALLEY CONFERENCE WRESTLING TITLE

Wausau West won a pair individual titles and had seven runner-up finishes as it took the team title at the Wisconsin Valley Conference Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at Marshfield High School.
West racked up 216.5 points to finish ahead of Wisconsin Rapids (208) and Marshfield (178.5) to capture the overall Wisconsin Valley Conference title. The three teams tied for the regular-season dual meet championship with 5-1 records.
Keagan Cliver took the 132-pound championship for Marshfield, holding off Lucas Bean of Wisconsin Rapids, 6-3.
Ryan Dolezal (160 pounds), Camren Dennee (170) and Cody Weix (182) also won individual titles for Marshfield, all by pin over Wausau West wrestlers.
Dolezal pinned Kayden Heisler in 3:02, Dennee finished off Reed Napiwocki with two seconds left in the match, and Weix pinned Nathan LaRue in 4:43.
West’s two titles came from Gabriel Ramos at 145 pounds and Joseph Berens at 195.
Ramos earned a thrilling 16-14 overtime win over Kale Roth of Stevens Point, and Berens won the 195-pound title by injury default over Merrill’s Wyatt Bathke.
Wisconsin Rapids had four individual champs as Landyn Freeman won at 106, Preston Spray was victorious with a pin over Sam Galang of Wausau West at 113, Aceyn Meyer pinned Grayden Rode of Marshfield to take the 126-pound title, and Brett Back earned an overtime win over Marshfield’s Garrett Willuweit at 152.
D.C. Everest’s Easton Cooper (120) and Blake Heal (138), Ryder Depies of Merrill (220) and Stevens Point’s Jaren Rohde (285) also earned titles.
Wisconsin Rapids will compete at the Baraboo regional and the other six Valley teams will be back in Marshfield for a regional competition next Saturday, Feb. 12.
