LA CROSSE – Bre Sullivan and Kendall Duellman scored goals in the second half to lift the Assumption girls soccer team to a come-from-behind 3-2 win over La Crosse Aquinas on Thursday in a WIAA Division 4 sectional semifinal.
Assumption (12-0-2) will host the Division 4 sectional final on Saturday at 1 p.m. against the winner of Chippewa Fall McDonell/Eau Claire Regis and Northland Pines.
Grace Dolan scored at the 8-minute mark, before Aquinas put up two goals in a span of 2:11 to take the lead.
A lightning delay allowed Assumption to regroup.
“We put forth a brilliant effort after trailing 2-1 at our first rain delay,” Assumption coach Jim Wendels said. “We regrouped and re-strategized to come back out and wear Aquinas down to get the win.
“The energy and effort necessary to beat Aquinas was rekindled after the equalizer (by Sullivan) and they never let up. Fantastic team win that took everything we had as coaches and players to grind this out.”
Sullivan scored 12:54 into the second half to tie the game and Duellman scored 12 minutes later for what proved to be the game-winner.
Katie Eithun had 11 saves in goal for the Royals.
