AMHERST – Matthew Glodowski scored on a 20-yard run with 2:44 remaining in the game to lift the Amherst football team to a thrilling 28-21 win over Kewaunee in a WIAA Division 5 Level 2 playoff game Friday night at Amherst High School.

Amherst (12-0), the No. 1 seed in its bracket, will host Central Wisconsin Conference Large Division rival and No. 2 seed Wittenberg-Birnamwood (9-3) in a Level 3 game next Friday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live at zaleskisports.com.

The two teams met back in Week 4 on Sept. 10 with Amherst pulling out a 26-19 victory. Wittenberg-Birnamwood advanced with a 27-18 win at home against No. 3 seed Brillion on Friday.

Amherst jumped out to a 14-0 lead after a 9-yard touchdown run by Glodowski and a 57-yard pass from Landon Moe to Ian Hall in the first quarter.

Kewaunee was driving late in the first half when Glodowski picked off a Mitchell Thompson pass and raced 80 yards for a touchdown with just nine seconds to go before halftime, and the Falcons led 20-0 at the break.

The Storm fought back to take the lead with three touchdowns in a span of five minutes.

Thompson ran in from the 6 with 4:15 to go in the third quarter and threw a 60-yard touchdown pass to Nathan VanGoethem with 43 seconds left in the period, making it 20-13.

Kewaunee quickly got the ball back and Thompson hit Benjamin Heim for an 18-yard touchdown pass, and a two-point conversion pass gave the Storm a 21-20 lead with 11:11 remaining.

The Falcons were able to drive late in the game to secure what proved to be the game-winning score with just under three minutes left.

Glodowski finished with 76 rushing yards, and Moe threw for 130 yards and ran for another 53 to lead the Amherst offense.
