MILWAUKEE – Lake Country Lutheran scored three times in the opening 20 minutes of the second half to pull away and defeat Wisconsin Rapids Assumption 5-1 in a Division 4 semifinal at the 2022 WIAA State Girls Soccer Tournament at Uihlein Soccer Park on Friday afternoon.

The loss ends Assumption’s undefeated season and a second consecutive trip to the state tournament comes to a halt in the D-4 semifinals.

Lake Country Lutheran (14-5-2) moves on to the Division 4 state championship game against Racine The Prairie School (12-5-4), which won a shootout to defeat No. 1 seed Kiel in the opening semifinal Friday.

Grace Daniels scored off an assist from Brooke Kerwin just 2:54 into the game to give the Lightning a quick 1-0 lead.

Assumption regrouped defensively and stayed within a goal for the remainder of the first half, but Lake Country Lutheran was able to adjust and found its offense coming out of halftime.

Kerwin connected with Daniels again 1:34 into the second half, and Layla Kelbel and Kerwin scored in a span of 2½ minutes to push the Lightning to a 4-0 lead.

Assumption avoided the shutout as Sarah Shaw knocked in a goal in the 60th minute, but the Royals couldn’t get anything else to go as Lake Country Lutheran goalkeeper Lauren Krempelbein finished with eight saves.

Kelbel added another goal for the Lightning with 7:06 remaining to finish off the scoring.

Morgan Reichl had 10 saves in goal for Assumption, which finishes the season 22-1.
