APPLETON – Cuba City plated two runs in the top of the seventh and held off a rally in the bottom by Amherst to win a Division 3 semifinal 2-1 on Wednesday at the WIAA State Baseball Tournament at Fox Cities Stadium.
Cuba City (22-4), making its first state tournament appearance since 1955, moves into the Division 3 state championship game against Saint Croix Falls (26-2), which is scheduled for Thursday at noon. Amherst suffered its only loss of the season and finishes the spring with a 28-1 mark.
Cuba City’s Kobe Vosberg and Amherst’s Ben Lee were locked in a pitchers’ duel for six innings.
Vosberg held the Falcons to just one hit through six innings, striking out 13, while Lee matched him, giving up just three hits through six with eight strikeouts.
Lee gave up a pair of two-out walks in the seventh, the only two he allowed in the game, and the Cubans made him pay. Reece Rosenkranz singled to left to score one and the leftfielder committed an error to allow another to come across. After a hit batter, Wyatt Blaskowski replaced Lee and coaxed a groundout to end the inning with Cuba City leading 2-0.
Amherst, back at state for the first time in 30 years, rallied in the bottom of the frame against Vosberg.
Lee reached second on an error in left field, Landon Moe reached on an infield single, just Amherst’s second hit of the game, and Matthew Glodowski walked to load the bases.
Blake Bussan came in to pitch for Cuba City and coaxed a pop up, but an error allowed the Falcons to score. Bussan recovered, however, retiring the next two batters to earn the save and send the Cubans into the title game.
