COLBY FOOTBALL OUTLASTS EDGAR IN BATTLE OF STATE-RANKED MARAWOOD OPPONENTS

Zaleski Sports

COLBY – For three quarters, the battle of state-ranked powerhouses between Colby and Edgar was the defensive battle most expected. In the fourth, the Hornets’ offense proved to be the different.

Colby scored three-straight touchdowns in the fourth quarter to erase a one-point deficit and defeated Edgar 29-14 in the Marawood Conference opener for both teams on Friday night at Colby High School.

Colby, ranked No. 2 in Division 6 in this past week’s Wissports.net State Coaches Poll, improves to 4-0 overall. Edgar, the No. 1 team in Division 7, falls to 2-2.

Colby took the opening kickoff and drove down the field on a succession of running plays, capped by a 13-yard touchdown run from Caden Healy. The extra point was good and the Hornets led 7-0.

From there the defenses took over. Neither team scored for the next two quarters until Edgar found paydirt early in the fourth.

On a fourth down and goal play, quarterback Mattison Butt threw up a prayer in the back of the end zone and Jordan Bunkelman hauled it in. Butt completed a two-point conversion pass and suddenly the Wildcats led 8-7 13 seconds into the final period.

Colby responded immediately, driving down the field and finishing off the drive with a 29-yard touchdown run by quarterback Brent Jeske. Jeske added a two-point run to put the Hornets up 14-8.

Colby added two more scores on a 45-yard touchdown run by Healy and a 28-yard scamper by Jeske after Edgar failed on a fake punt near midfield.

Karter Butt, who accounted for nearly all of Edgar’s offense with 141 yards rushing, scored from 33 yards out on the final play of the game to finish off the scoring.

Jeske finished with 163 rushing yards, Mason Voss added 116, and Healy 81 as the Hornets piled up 360 yards on the ground.

Colby will have another tough battle on its hands next week when it plays at undefeated Abbotsford on Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. Edgar will be at home against Marathon.
