WIRKUS PERFECT AGAIN AS EDGAR SOFTBALL ROUTS SEVASTOPOL TO EARN STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH

PLOVER – The Edgar softball team is heading to the state tournament for the first time in program history after the Wildcats blasted Sevastopol 11-0 in a WIAA Division 5 sectional final Thursday at Woyak Park behind another perfect game from pitcher Makayla Wirkus.


Edgar (16-6) will join Marawood Conference South Division rival Wisconsin Rapids Assumption, Thorp and Barneveld in the Division 5 field.


Seedings for the 2022 WIAA State Softball Tournament will be announced Friday. Division 5 semifinals at Goodman Diamond in Madison are scheduled for Thursday, June 9, at 8:30 p.m. and Friday, June 10, at 8 a.m. The D-5 championship game is scheduled for 8 a.m. Saturday, June 11.


Wirkus tossed her second consecutive perfect game in the sectionals as she struck out eight and didn’t allow a baserunner to the Pioneers. She also had two hits and two RBI in the win.


Morgan Streveler, Reagan Borchardt and Leah Davis all added two hits each, Karlin Lipinski had a single and three RBI, and Ashley Erickson and Jessica Mucha both had two RBI for the Wildcats.
