UWSP Quarterback Max Herro

MAYVILLE, N.D. – Max Herro threw for 261 yards and three touchdown passes as the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point football team opened its season with a 31-14 win over Mayville State (N.D.) in a nonconference game Saturday.

After falling behind 6-0, Herro hit Devin Baldridge for a 26-yard touchdown pass to give the Pointers a 7-6 lead.

Herro, a sophomore from Kettle Moraine High School, connected with Joe Hare for a pair of scores and Victor Ponterio kicked a 32-yard field to give UWSP a 24-14 halftime lead as the Pointers scored 10 points in the final 30 seconds.

The Pointers’ defense did the rest, shutting out Mayville St. in the second half. Vercion Gammel, who had a team-high 71 rushing yards, ran in from the 2-yard line with 5:55 to go in the fourth quarter to finish the scoring and cement the win for Stevens Point.

Baldridge led all Pointers’ receivers with 103 yards.

The Pointers’ defense allowed just 13 rushing yards on 32 attempts as they piled up eight sacks. Dakota Carriveau and Matt Rinehart each had 1½ sacks for Point.

UWSP will play another nonconference game at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, on Sept. 11 before opening its home schedule with a nonconference game against UW-Stout on Sept. 18 at 2 p.m.
