STEVENS POINT'S NO. 1 DOUBLES TEAM QUALIFIES FOR STATE GIRLS TENNIS MEET

EAU CLAIRE – The Stevens Point No. 1 doubles team of Abby Erwin and Tatum Thielman is going to state after finishing third at the WIAA Division 1 girls tennis sectional on Wednesday at the Menards Tennis Center.
The top four finishers in No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, and the top finisher in No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles automatically qualify for the 2021 WIAA Individual State Girls Tennis Tournament on Oct. 14-16 at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison. Up to 16 additional qualifiers may be added in the No. 1 flights, which will be announced Thursday or Friday.
No. 3 and No. 4 flights were competed strictly for team points. Hudson won the sectional title with 49 points to qualify for the 2021 WIAA Team State Girls Tennis Tournament in Madison on Oct. 22-23. Stevens Point finished fourth with 19 points.
Erwin and Thielman won their first match to qualify for state. They lost in the semifinals before defeated Brogan O’Flanagan and Rhea Warner of New Richmond 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, to finish third.
Jessica Kleman lost her first match at No. 1 singles to Izzy Brinkman of New Richmond 6-2, 6-0; Addison Jandrain lost both of her matches to finish fourth at No. 4 singles; and the No. 2 doubles team of Carolina Blakeman and Berit Borgnes finished second, losing in the finals to Jordan Yacoub and Bailey Finch of Hudson 6-0, 6-4, for SPASH.
Wisconsin Rapids’ No. 1 doubles team of Teagann Bondioli and Abbey Gust lost its first match to Kira Young and Grace Lewis of Hudson 6-0, 6-1.
Marshfield’s lone sectional qualifier, the No. 3 doubles team of Sam Ridgway and Danielle Minsaas, lost in the semifinals before winning the third-place match over Lilly Wittwer and Kaydee Rennie of Wausau West 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
