GREWE WINS TITLE FOR ABBOTSFORD/COLBY, WAUSAU WEST TAKES TEAM CROWN AT MERRILL WRESTLING TOURNAMENT

MERRILL – Wausau West won three weight classes and had nine top-four finishers to win the Bluejay Wrestling Challenge on Saturday at Merrill High School.


Wausau West finished with 505 points, with St. Croix Central taking second with 432 points in the 20-team tournament.


Edgar was eighth (200 points), Abbotsford/Colby finished 15th (170), Nekoosa/Assumption took 18th (121), Amherst was 19th (61), and Almond-Bancroft/Pacelli took 20th (6) among the local teams at the tournament.


Abbotsford/Colby captured one title as Carter Grewe (20-1) defeated Joseph Berens of Wausau West, 3-1, to win the 195-pound title.


Tanner Halopka finished second for Abbotsford/Colby, losing in the 145-pound title match to Gabriel Ramos of WW, 7-6. The loss was Halopka’s first of the season as he drops to 23-1.


Edgar’s top finish came from Waylon Wirkus (12-2), who lost the 285-pound championship match to Athan Sommers of Wausau West, 1-0.
