AMHERST – Amherst overcame an early two-touchdown deficit and defeated Stratford 28-14 to finish off an undefeated Central Wisconsin Conference Large Division championship season on Friday night at Amherst High School.

Raife Smart, who finished with 138 yards rushing, had touchdown runs of 37 and 6 yards early to give Stratford a 14-0 lead midway through the second quarter.

Amherst’s defense buckled down from there and the Falcons offense went to work.

Matthew Glodowski scored from the 2 with 1:29 to go before halftime to give the Falcons momentum and they didn’t let up in the second half.

Jake Hoffman tied the game with a 5-yard TD run late in the third quarter, and quarterback Landon Moe scored a pair of rushing touchdowns in the fourth as the Falcons pulled away to wrap up the conference title.

Moe finished with 103 rushing yards and another 90 through the air for Amherst, which heads into the playoffs perfect at 10-0 (includes a forfeit win).

Stratford finishes the regular season with a 7-2 record and a 5-2 mark in the CWC Large.

Both teams will open WIAA playoffs in Division 5 action next Friday, Oct. 22.
