STEVENS POINT BOYS CROSS COUNTRY RUNS AWAY WITH TITLE AT NEENAH INVITE, GIRLS TAKE FOURTH

NEENAH – The Stevens Point cross country teams opened its 2021 season at the Neenah Invitational on Friday at Memorial Park with the boys team winning the team title and the girls finishing fourth.


The Stevens Point boys had all of its seven runners finish in the top 14, with the scoring five finishing in the top nine.


Eric Boettcher was third (16:26.86), Zach Scharbarth took fourth (16:28.51), Aloysius Franzen finished fifth (16:40.22), James Jacobs was seventh (16:46.51) and Max Bushmaker was ninth (17:04.19) for Stevens Point, which easily won the team title with 28 points. Neenah was second with 107 and Hortonville third with 112.


Lauren Carlton of Ashwaubenon won the girls race in 19:56.60. Stevens Point’s top runners were Sarah Hopp (17th in 20:58.71), Brittany Beadles (19th, 20:59.81), Lilly Higgins (23rd, 21:08.60), and Autumn Itzen (24th, 21:21.30).


Appleton North won the girls team title with 86 points, four better than Oshkosh Lourdes. Kimberly was third with 95 and SPASH fourth with 106.


The Stevens Point JV boys dominated as well by putting 15 runners in the top 20, led by winner Cooper Gunderson and runner up Ethan Olds. The Stevens Point Jr. High team were paced by the 1, 2, 3 finish of Cooper Erickson, Ben Hopp and Dash Kvatek to easily win the team championship.


Stevens Point will host its home invitational at Standing Rock Park on Sept. 11 at 10 a.m. Auburndale, Amherst, Edgar, Iola-Scandinavia, Wisconsin Rapids Assumption, Marshfield and Wisconsin Rapids are among the teams that will be competing.
