MARSHFIELD – The Plover Black Sox and Stevens Point Sixers will be both playing in the state tournament next week, but a Class AAA American Legion baseball regional championship was still on the line on Saturday at Jack Hackman Field.

Plover scored twice in the bottom of the sixth then held off a late rally to defeat Stevens Point 6-5 to claim the regional title in the four-day double-elimination tournament.

Plover (18-8) is the host team for the Class AAA State American Legion Baseball Tournament, which will be held at Memorial Park from July 27-31 and came into the regional with an automatic bid. Stevens Point (14-8) wrapped up its spot at state as the Region 2 representative by making it to the finals with a 12-8 win over Wisconsin Rapids on Friday night.

Plover struck first, scoring twice in its opening at-bat. Brycen Cashin was hit by a pitch, and Tommy Drohner and Austin Beyer walked to load the bases. Thomas Hunt hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Cashin and Kenny Schultz followed with a single to plate Drohner to give the Black Sox a 2-0 lead.

After Isaac Cychosz had a sacrifice fly to get Stevens Point on the board in the third, Plover responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.

Drohner and Beyer reached on back-to-back errors and Hunt doubled to center to score both and put the Black Sox on top 4-1.

The Sixers plated single runs in the fourth and fifth innings on an RBI single by Nathan Lemanczyk and an RBI double by Cychosz to bring them within a run at 4-3.

Plover added two much-needed insurance runs in the sixth as Cashin singled and scored on a double by Drohner, and Hunt knocked in Drohner with a single.

Stevens Point fought back again in its final at-bat. Brady Houston singled and scored on a balk, and Cychosz had an RBI single to cut it to 6-5. Ben Raczek reached on an error and Isaiah Christianson walked to load the bases before Cyle Zblewski struck out the final batter to end it.

Cychosz finished with two hits and three RBIs to lead the Sixers.

Hunt finished with three hits and four RBIs for the Black Sox.

Jon Nafe earned the win for Plover, allowing three runs in five innings. Zblewski was credited with the save, allowing two runs in two innings.

Stevens Point will take on De Pere in the opening round of the state tournament at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Plover will play at 7 p.m. against an opponent to be finalized today. All 14 games of the state tournament will be live at
