Zaleski Sports

MARSHFIELD – Plover scored three runs in the first two innings and rode the arm of pitcher Jake Sankey the rest of the way as the Black Sox edged D.C. Everest 3-2 in a Class AAA American Legion baseball regional opener Wednesday afternoon at Jack Hackman Field.

D.C. Everest will play to keep its season alive against Stevens Point (12-6), which was a 10-5 winner over Wisconsin Rapids earlier on Wednesday, at 4 p.m. Thursday. Plover (15-8) will play in a winners’ bracket game at 7 p.m. Thursday against the winner of the Marshfield-Wausau game, which was scheduled for a 7 p.m. start Wednesday night.

D.C. Everest took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI groundout by Justin Reimer.

Plover responded with a run in the bottom of the first. Brycen Cashin led off with a walk, stole second and scored on a single by Tommy Drohner to tie the game at 1-1.

The Black Sox got an RBI double from Jon Nafe and an RBI groundout from Cashin in the second inning to grab a 3-1 lead.

Sankey did the rest. Despite five errors behind him, Sankey only allowed one more run and finished off the seven-inning complete game with five strikeouts, just one walk, and only two singles allowed, both to Chris Wiesman.

Austin Beyer was 3-for-3 with a triple and a run scored for Plover.
