MOSINEE – Mosinee scored two goals in the opening five minutes and went on to a 5-1 win over Wausau East in the boys soccer opener for both teams on Tuesday at Edgewood Park.
Toren Holtz picked up right where he left off last season after his All-State nod with a score just 3:33 in to the season by dribbling through the last defenders. Cole Holtz had the assist on that goal.
Caden Schmirler had a fabulous finish next, just 1 minute later at 4:38, assisted by a crossing pass from Jaeger Dhein to give the Indians a quick 2-0 lead.
East's challenges across midfield were shut down with outstanding play by defenders Ethan Tazelaar and Josh Ivey, Mosinee coach Joseph Carlson said.
Dhein scored off deflected shot by the Wausau East goalkeeper, and at the 30-minute mark Schmirler headed in a crossing pass to make it 4-0 in favor of Mosinee.
East scored before halftime, but Mosinee was able to shut the Lumberjacks out in the second half, adding a goal late on a botched play by East for an own goal.
Mosinee outshot East 10-3.
The Indians host Clintonville for a nonconference game at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
