MARSHFIELD VOLLEYBALL WINS TWO MATCHES AT WVC MEET TO CLIMB INTO FIRST PLACE

MERRILL – The Marshfield volleyball team defeated Wisconsin Rapids and D.C. Everest at the second Wisconsin Valley Conference meet of the season on Saturday at Merrill High School.


The Tigers beat Rapids 25-13, 25-16, 25-18, and Everest 25-18, 25-23, 25-8, to move into a first-place tie in the conference standings with D.C. Everest with two matches remaining.


“I’m extremely happy with how our team played today,” Marshfield coach Dawn Sadowska said. “Once again a very balanced attack and our serve receive just keeps improving. With D.C. Everest's loss on Thursday, we knew if we took care of business today, it would put us back in control of our own destiny as far as another conference championship. The girls stayed focused and showed what a dominant team we can be.”


Abby Ongna had 29 kills and 18 digs, Casey Frankland had 20 kills, 16 digs and five service aces, and Reinya Balderson had 78 assists to lead Marshfield to the two wins.


Elise Uphoff added a team-high 21 digs, Caitlyn Pernsteiner added 19 kills, and Rylee Corteen had 14 kills for the Tigers.


In other matches at the meet: Stevens Point defeated Wausau West 3-2 and lost to D.C. Everest 3-2; Merrill defeated Wausau West 3-1 and lost to D.C. Everest 3-1; Wausau East beat Wausau West 3-1 and lost to Wisconsin Rapids 3-0; and Wausau West swept Wisconsin Rapids 3-0.


Marshfield and D.C. Everest are tied for the conference lead at 8-2 with two matches remaining. Merrill is now 7-3, Stevens Point 4-6, Wisconsin Rapids and Wausau West 4-7, and Wausau East 1-9.


Marshfield will be at Wausau West on Tuesday and at home against Merrill on Thursday to finish its conference and regular-season schedule as it eyes a second-straight WVC championship. D.C. Everest will be at home Tuesday against Wausau East and at Wisconsin Rapids on Thursday.
