MARSHFIELD, D.C. EVEREST EACH QUALIFY FIVE FOR STATE AT WIAA DIVISION 1 WRESTLING SECTIONAL
WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Marshfield will be sending five to the state wrestling tournament after each won titles at the WIAA Division 1 Individual Wrestling Sectional on Saturday at Lincoln High School.
All five of the Tigers who are going to the state meet next week are underclassmen.
Freshmen Hoyt Blaskowski and Brett Franklin, sophomores Keagan Cliver and Ryan Dolezal, and junior Gabe Pugh will be representing the Tigers at the 2020 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison on Feb. 27-29.
Cliver (28-7) won the 120-pound championship to return to state for the second year in a row, edging Kale Roth (36-9) of Stevens Point, 5-4.
Blaskowski (43-4) followed with a 7-1 win over Blake Heal (24-12) of D.C. Everest at 126 pounds
Franklin (26-5) defeated Gabriel Ramos (32-10) of Wausau West, 9-2, in the 132-pound finals.
Pugh (40-3), who will be making his third-straight state meet appearance, defeated Demetrio Covarrubias (34-10) of D.C. Everest 6-5 to capture the 138-pound title.
Dolezal (41-4) slipped past Leo Draveling (37-7) of Hudson, 6-5, to win the 145-pound title and will head to state for the second year in a row.
In addition to Roth, Stevens Point had two other state qualifiers. Justin Groshek (42-0) continued his undefeated season by winning the 113-pound title, and Brett Johnston (30-15) won a second-place wrestleback at 192 pounds with a pin of Nick Klug of D.C. Everest in 15 seconds.
Wisconsin Rapids will be sending three to state. Preston Spray (42-3) won the 106-pound title, Wyler Lubeck (43-6) earned the 152-pound championship, and Andrew Schutz (34-10) finished second at 195.
D.C. Everest had five state qualifiers, including Heal and Covarrubias. Gabe Carter (39-1) won the 170-pound title and Orion Boe (43-1) earned a win in the 220-pound final for the Evergreens. Freddy Lehrke (21-6) also earned a spot at state by winning a second-place wrestleback over Garrett Willuweit of Marshfield, 7-1.
Ramos was Wausau West’s lone state qualifier.
