ATHENS – Terrance Cottrell-Roberson nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Auburndale boys basketball team to a 55-52 win over Athens in a Marawood Conference crossover game Thursday at Athens High School.

Auburndale led 52-49 when Athens’ Cooper Diedrich made a 3-pointer and was fouled with 9.4 seconds left.

Auburndale called timeout and Diedrich missed the free throw. The Eagles rebounded and got the ball to Cottrell-Roberson in the corner where he banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Auburndale the victory, its 12th in the last 14 games.

Athens led 23-15 at halftime before Auburndale put up 40 second-half points to eke out the victory.

Lucas Yeske led Auburndale (13-8, 8-6 Marawood South) with 15 points and Cottrell-Roberson finished with 11 in the win.

Aiden Janke had 26 points and 13 rebounds, and Diedrich added 12 for Athens, which falls to 16-5 and 9-5 in the Marawood North.

Athens plays a nonconference game at undefeated Iola-Scandinavia on Monday. Auburndale hosts Amherst in a nonconference game Tuesday.
