WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The top two batters in the Abbotsford/Colby batting order set the tone as the Falcons defeated Wisconsin Rapids Assumption 8-2 in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday in the 2021 season opener for both teams.
Leadoff hitter Ross Elmhorst had a single and triple, and No. 2 batter Hunter Soyk had a single and double, both reached on errors as well and each scored three runs for Abbotsford/Colby.
The Falcons scored three times in the third before Assumption responded with a pair runs in the bottom of the inning as Ryan Shaw reached on an error and scored on a double by Nick Leberg. Leberg came around to score on a single by Alex Sullivan to cut the deficit to one.
That would be all the Royals would muster, however, and Abbotsford/Colby tacked on a pair of runs in the both the fifth and seventh innings around a single tally in the sixth.
Shaw finished with two hits for the Royals.
Assumption returns to action Thursday at Phillips.
