It is time to vote for the MarshfieldAreaSports.com & Zaleski Sports High School Athlete of the Month for December.

The High School Athlete of the Month award main sponsor for the 2020-21 school year is Awards ‘n’ More of Wisconsin Rapids.

Varsity athletes from the following high schools are eligible to be nominated for the award: Abbotsford, Athens, Assumption, Auburndale, Colby, Columbus Catholic, Edgar, Granton, Greenwood, Loyal, Marathon, Marshfield, Mosinee, Neillsville, Owen-Withee, Pacelli, Pittsville, Spencer, Stratford, Stevens Point, Thorp and Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln.

Online voting will take place from Jan. 5-11 at MarshfieldAreaSports.com. The winner of the December High School Athlete of the Month will be announced on Jan. 12 and will be presented an award from Awards ‘n’ More.

To nominate an athlete for a monthly award in the future, email MarshfieldAreaSports.com publisher Paul Lecker at paul@marshfieldareasports.com prior to the 26th of each month.

The winner of the MarshfieldAreaSports.com & Zaleski Sports High School Athlete of the Year will be announced in July 2021.

Winners of the Athlete of the Month awards are ineligible to be nominated again during that particular sports season.

All decisions regarding voting and nominations made by MarshfieldAreaSports.com and Zaleski Sports are final.

The nominees for the December award are:

*Alexis Frieboth, Mosinee girls basketball. Frieboth, a junior guard, scored in double figures in eight of the nine games for Mosinee in December. She had 21 points in a two-point loss to Auburndale on Dec. 29 and had 20 points at Medford in a victory on Dec. 21. Frieboth is averaging 14.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 4.6 steals per game for Mosinee, which enters January with a 7-3 record.

*Eden Jacobson, Marshfield Columbus Catholic boys basketball. Jacobson, a senior forward, scored in double figures in each of the Dons’ seven games in December as they started the season 6-1. Jacobson had 27 points and 17 rebounds in a win over Stevens Point Pacelli on Dec. 10 and had 19 points in a victory over Gilman on Dec. 18. Overall, Jacobson is averaging 15.3 points peg game this season.

*Bella Opelt, Neillsville girls basketball. Opelt, a senior, scored in double figures in eight of the Warriors’ 10 games in December as they started the season 9-1. Opelt had 23 points in a win over Granton on Dec. 17 and again against Wauwatosa West on Dec. 29. She also scored 20 points in Neillsville’s season opener Dec. 3 against Spencer. Opelt is averaging 14.6 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game.

*Savannah Schley, Loyal girls basketball. Schley, a senior, guard, leads the undefeated Greyhounds in scoring at 12.5 points per game, hitting for double figures four times in December. She had a season-high 19 points in a win over Spencer on Dec. 22 and had 15 points in a blowout victory over Owen-Withee on Dec. 14. Loyal heads into January with a 7-0 record.

*Hunter Wright, Auburndale boys basketball. Wright, a senior guard, leads the Eagles (6-2) in scoring at 16.2 points per game. He hit for 24 points and had 14 rebounds in a win over Phillips on Dec. 11 and matched his season high of 24 points against Weyauwega-Fremont on Dec. 28.

Previous winners of the Athlete of the Month award during the 2020-21 school year are: Columbus Catholic soccer player Alex Edwards (September), Marshfield girls swimmer Faith Risa (October), and Marshfield football player Wyatt LeMoine (November).
