VOLLEYBALL

Yorktown suffered its first loss of the season Sept. 17 as it fell in straight sets against New Castle in a match that pitted arguably the two best teams in the state.

Class 4A No. 3 New Castle emerged with a 25-22, 25-19, 25-20 victory against Class 4A No. 1 Yorktown. The loss was the Tigers’ first since they fell to Crown Point in the 2017 state semifinals. Courtney Watkins had 16 kills for Yorktown.


In other action, Class 3A No. 2 Burris swept Seton Catholic behind 11 kills by Lauren Nixon and 45 assists from Mara Perry. Class 2A No. 2 Wapahani won three straight against Shenandoah as Mallory Summers had 12 kills. Delta swept New Palestine as Molly Hunt had 21 kills and five aces.


Wapahani defeated Burris in five sets in a top-level match last week.



CROSS COUNTRY

Yorktown runners swept the individual titles at the Bearcat Invitational. Matthew Mitsch was the championship in the boys division, and Amberleigh Sorenson won the girls race.
