SPASH'S PECHINSKI IN SECOND PLACE AFTER OPENING DAY OF WIAA GIRLS GOLF TOURNAMENT

MADISON – Stevens Point junior Riley Pechinski stands two strokes out of first place after shooting a 2-under par 70 at the opening day of the 2021 WIAA State Girls Golf Tournament at University Ridge Golf Course.


Pechinski is in second place, two shots behind New Richmond’s Lanie Veenendall, with a second 18-hole round scheduled for Tuesday remaining.


Pechinski birdied the opening two holes, had a bogey on No. 3 and then had an eagle on the par-five sixth hole to go to 3-under par.


Following a bogey on No. 7, Pechinski had a birdie on No. 8, before three-straight pars. She had bogeys on 12, 14 and 15, but responded with back-to-back birdies on the 16th and 17th holes to get back to 2-under par.


The only other area golfer in the field, Wausau East/West’s Tess Bruner, shot a 95 is tied for 67th among the 78-player field.


Westosha Central leads the team standings at 24-over par, two shots ahead of Middleton.
