ABBOTSFORD – The Mosinee baseball team survived a late rally in the semifinals to defeat Altoona, then pounded Rice Lake to win the WIAA Division 2 sectional on Tuesday at Red Arrow Park and earn a berth in next week’s state tournament.

Mosinee (26-3) will play in a Division 2 semifinal at the 2022 WIAA State Baseball Tournament at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton on Wednesday, June 15. Seedings and matchups will be announced Wednesday. The state appearance will be Mosinee’s sixth all-time and first since back-to-back berths in 2017-18.

Mosinee led 5-1 after four innings against Altoona before the Railroaders (21-4) mounted a comeback effort.

Altoona scored once in the fifth and twice in the bottom of the seventh. After a pair of walks, Garrett Shupe relieved Taylor Lemanski and struck out the final batter to preserve the win for starter Keagen Jirschele.

Jirschele struck out eight in six innings and added a double and two RBI in the victory. Lemanski and Trenton Dorn both had two hits, and Dorn also drove in two runs for Mosinee.

In the championship game, Mosinee dominated from the start.

Davin Stoffel smashed a solo home run in the first inning, and the Indians piled on five more in the second to take control.

Jirschele had an RBI single, Eli Miland scored on an error, Jirschele scored on a sacrifice fly by Tanner Unertl, and Gavin Obremski singled home another to put the Indians up 5-0.

After Rice Lake scored twice in the third, Mosinee opened it up with a four-run fifth. Jirschele had a two-run home run and two more scored on a Warriors’ error.

Shupe threw the first six innings, striking out three and Trevor Garski finished up the victory to send Mosinee to state.
