WAUSAU – The Marshfield boys basketball team clinched no worse than a share of the Wisconsin Valley Conference championship with a 49-34 win over Wausau West on Thursday at West High School.

Chase Hinson scored 15 points and Brooks Hinson added 11 for the Tigers, who improve to 14-4 overall and remain unbeaten in the Wisconsin Valley Conference at 10-0.

The conference championship is Marshfield’s fifth all-time and third since 2010. The Tigers shared the WVC title with Merrill in 2019.

“The work for us to get to this point really started last year,” Marshfield coach Chris Fischer said. “A lot of things didn’t go our way, but the five seniors we had last year…they set the precedent for how hard we have to play, how hard we have to work on a nightly basis.

“The underclassmen, that were juniors last year and seniors this year, they took it to another level. We had a tremendous summer and as the summer went on we started having some success, and our confidence started to grow.”

Marshfield holds a two-game lead over second-place Stevens Point with two conference games remaining. The two teams play at Stevens Point on Feb. 18.

Marshfield led 20-13 at halftime and outscored the Warriors (11-10, 4-5 WVC) by eight in the second half to pull away.

Marshfield hosts Holmen in a nonconference game Friday at 7:15 p.m. The game will be live-streamed at zaleskisports.com.
