MARATHON GIRLS BASKETBALL EDGES EDGAR

Zaleski Sports

EDGAR – Marathon overcame a nine-point halftime deficit and held off a late run by Edgar to defeat the Wildcats 55-54 in a Marawood Conference South Division girls basketball game Monday night at Edgar High School.

Edgar led 34-25 at halftime but the Raiders responded out of the break with a 14-2 run over the final nine minutes to take a 39-36 lead.

The game was tight the rest of the way with Edgar having a chance to win it at the end.

Edgar’s Morgan Schnelle made a pair of free throws with 32 seconds left to cut the Marathon lead to one.

Edgar was able to get the ball back for one final possession, but missed on a pair of shots, including a desperation 3-pointer by Malia Hoesly as time expired, and the Raiders were able to hold on.

Hoesly finished with 17 points and Makayla Wirkus added 11 for Edgar.

Allison Wokatsh scored 20 points, and Jenna Achbrenner and Kali Prihoda each had 10 for Marathon.

Both teams are now 2-1 overall and 1-1 in Marawood South play, and return to action Tuesday. Marathon will be at Shiocton and Edgar will play at Northland Lutheran in nonconference action.
