Iola-Scandinavia boys basketball player Parker Prahl has been voted as the & Zaleski Sports January High School Athlete of the Month.

The High School Athlete of the Month Award main sponsor for the 2021-22 school year is Awards ‘n’ More of Wisconsin Rapids. The monthly award will continue through June 2022, and the winner of the & Zaleski Sports High School Athlete of the Year will be announced in July.

Varsity athletes from the following high schools are eligible to be nominated for the award: Abbotsford, Amherst, Athens, Assumption, Auburndale, Colby, Columbus Catholic, Edgar, Granton, Greenwood, Iola-Scandinavia, Loyal, Marshfield, Mosinee, Neillsville, Newman Catholic, Pacelli, Pittsville, Port Edwards, Rosholt, Spencer, Stratford, Stevens Point, Wild Rose and Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln.

Other nominees for the January award were: Port Edwards boys basketball player Nathan Gibbs, Athens girls basketball player Jazelle Hartwig, Marshfield girls basketball player Dani Minsaas, and Wausau Newman Catholic boys basketball player Mason Prey.

Prahl, a senior forward, is averaging 18 points and 10 rebounds per game this season for the Thunderbirds, who were 15-0 heading into February. Prahl scored 22 points or more four times in January for Iola-Scandinavia. He had a season-high 26 points in victories over Shiocton on Jan. 4 and Menominee Indian on Jan. 14, the latter in which he also eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his career.
