IOLA – In a battle of what are shaping up as the top two seeds in a WIAA Division 4 boys basketball sectional, undefeated Iola-Scandinavia made a statement as to which team should be the top seed.
The Thunderbirds, ranked fourth in this week’s Wissports.net Division 4 state coaches poll, used an early 23-0 run to take command and rolled to a 63-30 victory over Marathon in a nonconference matchup Tuesday night at Iola-Scandinavia High School.
Parker Prahl scored 28 points to lead the way for the undefeated Thunderbirds (18-0), who stormed out to a 36-9 lead by halftime and stayed in control throughout.
Marathon was held to 11 made field goals, with no player scoring more than six as it falls to 16-3 this season after having its five-game winning streak snapped.
Both teams return to conference play on Friday. Marathon will be at Phillips for a Marawood Conference crossover, and Iola-Scandinavia, which has already clinched the Central Wisconsin Conference East Division championship, will host Shiocton. Both games begin at 7:15 p.m.
