Zaleski Sports
HURLEY – The Hurley and Edgar football teams met for the second time this year, and just like the first matchup, the second went right down to the wire.
Hurley intercepted a pass with 1:42 remaining in the game to thwart an Edgar drive and finish off a 22-16 win in a WIAA Division 7 Level 2 playoff game on Friday night at Hurley High School.
Hurley (13-0) moves on to a Level 3 matchup at home next Friday, Nov. 5, against Coleman, which was a 56-18 winner over Stevens Point Pacelli. Edgar finishes the season 10-4.
Hurley, which defeated Edgar 22-20 in overtime earlier this season, ran out toa 14-0 lead on two Max Blamey touchdown runs.
Edgar put together a nice drive in the final minutes of the first half, with quarterback Mattison Butt connecting with Everet Brehm for a 19-yard touchdown pass with 25 seconds to go. The two hooked up again for a two-point conversion and the Wildcats trailed 14-8 heading into halftime.
The two teams exchanged third-quarter touchdowns, with Tony Cummings rumbling 51 yards for a score for Hurley and Edgar countering with a 6-yard touchdown run by Karter Butt, making the score 22-16 heading into the fourth.
Hurley put together another long drive and reached the two. Going for it on fourth down, the Northstars fumbled with Mattison Butt recovering at the 1 with 4:24 to go in the game, giving Edgar one final chance.
The Wildcats got as far as the 33 before Mattison Butt was intercepted by Derek Ransanici with 1:26 left to end the threat.
