GREENWOOD FOOTBALL EDGES GILMAN IN OT THRILLER

Zaleski Sports

GREENWOOD – Xander Hinker hauled in a 13-yard touchdown pass from Cooper Bredlau and Greenwood’s defense picked off Gilman to beat the Pirates in overtime 26-20 in the Cloverwood Conference football opener for both teams on Friday night at Greenwood High School.

After the Indians took the lead in OT, Rogan Travis intercepted a pass to seal the victory.

Greenwood led 20-0 at halftime before Gilman, ranked ninth in the latest Wissports.net Division 7 State Coaches Poll, rallied to tie it.

Pirates’ quarterback Gabe Gunderson scored on a 20-yard run with 17 seconds but Greenwood blocked the extra point, sending the game to overtime, where the Indians took charge to improve to 3-0 this season, and likely a spot in the state rankings after Week 3. Gilman is now 2-1.

Bredlau threw three touchdowns passes to Westen Schmitz – 10, 63 and 13 yards – in the second quarter, to seemingly put Greenwood in control.

However, the Pirates’ defense clamped down and their offense fought back.

Gunderson had a 2-yard TD run and threw a 40-yard scoring pass to Kade Kroeplin to cut the Indians’ lead to 20-14 heading into the fourth.

Bredlau finished 9-for-15 for 191 yards and the four touchdown passes. Schmitz hauled in seven passes for 160 yards and the three TDs. Wyatt Artac led the Indians’ rushing attack with 99 yards on 22 carries.

Greenwood plays at Owen-Withee (0-3, 0-1 Cloverwood) at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13.
