FORFEITS COSTLY AS WEST SALEM/BANGOR DEFEATS NEILLSVILLE/GREENWOOD/LOYAL AT TEAM WRESTLING SECTIONAL

SOMERSET – The Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal wrestling team couldn’t overcome the three matches it had to forfeit and dropped a 48-32 decision to West Salem/Bangor in the semifinals of the WIAA Division 2 team wrestling sectional Tuesday at Somerset High School.


Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal wrestled even with West Salem/Bangor in the 11 contested matches, but it couldn’t make up the needed ground it had to as it had to forfeit in three weights.


Amery went on to defeat West Salem/Bangor 54-19 in the finals to claim a spot in the WIAA State Team Wrestling Tournament, which will be held March 5 at the University of Wisconsin Fieldhouse in Madison.


Keeghan Anding (152 pounds), Dan Polzin (220), Gunner Hoffmann (285) and Derek Zschernitz (126) all won by pin for NGL.


Dane Luchterhand added a 6-3 overtime win at 170 pounds and Hudzon Sebesta-Opelt won by technical fall 18-3 at 132 pounds as well for NGL.


Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal will have eight wrestlers compete at the Division 2 individual sectional on Saturday at Amery. The top three finishers in each weight class qualify for the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison on Feb. 24-26.
